Okawa Nishikigoi Center - Nisai Harvest 2010
Koibito Japan travelled to Kyushu Island today to take in the final Nisai Harvest of 2010 for Okawa Nishikigoi Center. Yoneichi and Yuji had promised us some really excellent koi were coming from this final pond, and we weren't disappointed!
Okawa Nishikigoi Center for those of you who don't know has been in the business of raising koi for 3 generations now. Yoneichi and Yuji Tanaka are the Brothers who now run Okawa Nishikigoi Center, and they are keeping the family tradition of raising HQ Nishikigoi, with special focus on the Okawa Sensuke Kohaku bloodline.
The drive from the farm to the mudponds took about 1 hour, and upon getting there Yoneichi and his father Toshiaki San had been busy for some hours already draining water from the mudponds to be harvested. Without further ado the team sprung into action, and with the help of two friends of Yoneichi and Yuji, their Mother and Father, and their two wives the ponds were harvested. The mudponds harvsted today, were man-made concrete sided ponds, so harvesting 100% of the koi one time can be a little difficult, as the bottom mud in the pond tends to really shift in the summer creating small and hills and troughs which koi hide in as the net is dragged through the pond. In the largest of the ponds this meant the brothers and their friends having to resort to chasing down the final few koi on foot, in waders, through ankle deep mud and thigh deep water, and catching them in a large hand held koi net! It looked like very tiring work indeed!
All the fish made it back to main koi house in Okawa City without problem, and we even had time to stop off for a ramen before finally getting back! With many Japanese hobbyists already at the farm waiting for the final nisai to arrive, Yoneichi and Yuji were very busy, but at the same time very satisfied having these final nisai home at last. Some really special koi were harvested from this final pond, including one really amazing Hanatsuki Kohaku, (See last two photos). The farm is really getting better and better every year, and by the looks of their tategoi tosai ponds, 2011 Nisai promise to be really something special.
