Momotaro 3-sai harvest

Momotaro 3-sai harvestWe were at Momotaro today, and were able to watch the 3-sai harvest...

The two largest man-made mud ponds closest to Momotaro Koi Farm were drained and harvested today. The two ponds are both approx. 5,000 tonnes, and each one is drained using 2x150 tonnes/hour pumps. It takes around 14-15 hours to get the water in the ponds down to around 80 cm, and from there, the harvest can begin.

There was a bumper crop of 3-sai koi removed from the pond, requiring a real team effort involving nearly all members of the team at Momotaro. In total about 130 3-sai were harvested, one of the biggest fish that came out was a 75 cm 3-sai Sanke owned by a private Japanese customer of Momotaro. This koi entered the mud pond as 2-sai at 57 cm, so doing a little bit of simple maths... it grew 18 cm over the summer...amazing!!!!

Also included in this news is a photo of a Showa being kept at Momotaro for one a Koibito-Japan customer. This Showa, as you can see from the picture above is a stunner, now 70 cm, it has incredible skin quality with fantastic kiwa, teri and sashi. The sumi, as you can see, is about a strong and jet black as possible, and extremely well defined.

We hope you enjoy the photos from the harvest, there are quite a lot to go through!!!
